If it were a color would be the classic of the London fog, and instead is a movie, what's important, given the signature of its director, the accustomed honors and festival-goers for years one of the greatest humanists of world cinema.

Leigh sembra più interessato alla costruzione della cornice piuttosto che allo sviluppo della storia. Avendo a che fare con una drammaturgia da teatro cechoviano, di cui riprende non solo il rapporto tra lo scorrere del tempo e lo stato d’animo dei personaggi ma anche una certa staticità nell’azione, il regista rende evidente le sue scelte dividendo la vicenda in quattro quadri corrispondenti alle omonime stagioni, utilizza la luce naturale ed anche quella artificiale, (nell’ultimo quadro, quello invernale desaturato dei colori primari per corrispondere all’atmosfera di dolore per una morte improvvisa) e si mantiene sempre all’interno di un cinema da camera, fatto di interni domestici e piani americani, occasionally interrupted by the same long shot that echoed scenes of country life seems to allude to the natural cycle of life. A perfect preparation so that the schematic is coupled with the unfolding of a story that comes out from a naturally free of surprises and a river of words that adds nothing to what we see.
